It may seem unimaginable to those of us who live in the developed world surrounded by so much abundance — supermarkets, specialty grocery stores, restaurants, farmers’ markets, cooking shows, slow food, fast food. But in a few short decades, the planet will face a massive food-shortage crisis. Unless we act fast.The world’s population has nearly tripled since 1950, and is now expected to exceed 9 billion before the middle of this century. (It’s now about 7.5 billion.) According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, agricultural production will have to increase by a staggering 70 percent by 2050 to keep up with demand.
